Anonymous Baby

Picture no.1 of 2010... soft long headed pastel baby.

I didn't initially mean it to be weird. I am just trying to find ways round babies. This was my first try. It's based on a picture of Bob in the bath as a baby but it doesn't look like him any more. It didn't matter too much though, I was trying out new paper and a new approach to combining materials. By repeating the process and taking notes I might end up with a more confident approach that is either sellable or showoffy. One of the major hazards with drawing babies is ending up with something creepy or ghoulish.

Dirty kitty moon

Bad dirty kitty! Bad dirty Chloe!

I still plan a bit of TNG drawing

We spent the night in Frisco, At every kind of disco

Today's Jacksons.

Strange days

Michael with chairs... Ruskin says you should always draw what's in the background.

This was originally Michael and Jermaine, but something weird happened with the eyebrows which has made it Tito and Tito. Or possibly Joe and Joe.

Marlon.

thought guffs of moderate promise

I found this ancient image of a man sort of wrestling two animals in a symmetrical composition. It came up more than once in Medieval times. I think about medieval art a lot.

I also tried to imagine what I myself would look like after having my hair redesigned. It turned out alright. But I did these first.

I have no proper energy draining low paid job now, if you have any suggestions about how I should spend my time profitably, let me know. I have my own ideas but I'm not sure if they are 100% good.

party bag of messy surprises

I found this sequence of photographs of a falling cat. I liked it.

Pastels are messy. I am messy.

Man and animal.

Million Dollar Man.

Wrestler.. stretching the definition. Messy plastic paper.

I used this discarded warrior drawing to try to make lines a bit like William Blake and think what I could do with them.

Finally: a snake so big and evil he didn't quite all fit on the scanner.

Smudged Pillocks

I'm not obsessed with wrestling at the mo, but I should have a show of my wrestling drawings coming up, so I've been wrestling with drawing through wrestling drawings. Ultimate Warrior!

I want to use pastels more and hone my techniques through honing.

The explorations felt valid, the muse came and went in a floozily fickle fashion.

Peculiar bonus: the cover of my diary beginning 10th December 2001, ending 16th July 2002. Different times. I was at once more and less confident.

Monty Python series entry no. 1: Palin

Palin: volume 1 part 1: first Palins

It made sense to start with Palin, he's the cute one. When he was young his face was kind of soft pink and squelchy. As he got older things got more leathery and crevicetastic.

I'm still comparatively new to watercolour as the versatile medium that it is. Here is Palin as groupie.

Palin has sparkle, possibly the first tangible attribute I started finding attractive in men. I was susceptible to sparkle long before I gave a toss about pleasantly shaped deltoids.

Water Paint Chaos Year

So this year I am going to try watercolour... in fact I am quite excited about this and thinking about it while working at the camera shop, thinking of sponges and honey.

Oh and I tried Marlo as an experimental initial muse. She drew me and my sister Hannie so I suppose after that I felt a a bit like I was allowed, though I began casually.

This one's at a disadvantage for being the first, and horizontal, it will come out small on the blog... click to enlarge.

Mr old timey caricature yawn king doesn't care.

Was watching Inland Empire during this, wondering whether to throw caution to the wind and go much weirder in future

Un Denmis

(That wasn't a typo. That was what I accidentally wrote on the drawing.)

Undennis? Re-Dennis? Non-Dennis. Nonnis.

Sometimes you start with a person then just end up having fun with some shapes. But you can take it back to the person again afterwards.

Light the New Old Ladder Moon

I finally finished this version of the Brian Wilson Moon/ Heaven Ladder painting that was started back in early 2004.

I posted some of my Beach Boys fan art on a Brian Wilson message forum, and I got this surprising response...

'What luck to see Chloe's fantastic Beach Boys-artwork online! I'm finishing an esoteric SMiLE-essay where Chloe's painting, the 5'th one from top (also known as "Light The Lamp" from its presentation in Open Sky # seven, 2004) will play an all important part.
Thanks Chloe and keep up the good work!'

I had no idea that my painting had taken on a 'folk name!' Or that people were writing essays about it.

That was in reference to the original version of this composition:

And here is the new one, finsished TODAY, a little bit more shuffly and snuffly, dusty and dirty. The composition is less graceful, with the sky jammed in. I blame my four years ago self for that. But it has its own thing.

Dennis + Nelson: Nennis

What the heck, a post with ill-matched stuffstuff in it.

Let us all come to terms with the nineteen-sixties.

It will take me a little while to figure out firstly what I am doing with the Beach Boys, and secondly how to draw the Beach Boys better. But I am going to try and get my teeth into them as it were, because well, why not the Beach Boys, and I need to get my teeth into something instead of flitting from thing to thing... I need to get into stuff with depth and intent in order to get satisfying results.

The move back to Beach Boys is a return to something with soul-meaning for me, and I hope to be able to apply the body-meaning I learned from the wrestlers.

And to do it with some kind of dynamic humour, but also truth-depth, so I'm asking quite a lot of my self-taught little skills.

So obviously Dennis is a good place to start.

I had a dream about arm wrestling Dennis. And winning! I think my dreams were trying to give me picture ideas lately. I'm too ashamed of being an artist by day.

If you are not familiar with Beach Boys lore, I think it would be fair to say that Dennis was the Sex Beach Boy. I don't think any of the others would try to dispute that. Though in fairness, I am fairly sure that Brian would have been the Beach Boy I would have been crushing on. In fairness. Not just saying that because of hindsight. Dennis didn't sit down much. I couldn't have been doing with that. To be fair.

(Thought that paragraph could do with a couple more 'fairs'.)

On a kind of related note, I also drew Nelson Bragg from Brian Wilson's current band. Because he has been very nice to me. Oh and he's a talented chap.

He looks slightly worried and slightly like a wuzzle-farmer in this drawing.

Here is a tiger of the old school.
