Old Thing

More old stuff.. a poster for one of those art show thingies that we kids used to put on right here and now by ourselves. This is I guess from 2000 or 01. 01 I guess. I started having retrospectives quite early.

Not quite soft focus pinup dreamboys

Am I incapable of flattery?

Well, the possibility, probability even, has cropped up that some of the wrestlers I draw will see the drawings and paintings I've done. Within reason. They'll see them because Mick Foley is my friend now. Which made me think that I ought to do a blog entry called 'John Cena is a handsome and talented man' with pictures to match that sentiment.

But it didn't quite work. At least not this time.

Then I thought about totemic booby monkeys.

This is sort of a remake of one of the earlier primitive images from this blog. One day I will be able to make things be cute.

And I'm not quite ready to do a blog without a picture of Stephen in it. Stephen and Bob the day a dog chased Stephen up a tree this spring.

Wrestling is still fun

Some of these drawings are leftovers and anomalies from earlier eras.

What the heck is this? What possessed me? Sometimes when I try to assimilate cartoon influences things go a bit ungainly. John K just did another post about 'cute' and I think I might be an unmaster of cute, like McKimson. I'm rubbish. Maybe I have a man gene in my drawing lobes. But maybe I haven't tried hard enough for cute, maybe I'm beating about the bush looking for something obscure:

I was never going to post this one because I thought it was stiff and clumsy, then I looked at gaping John up on the rough drawings wall, and he acquired a certain pathos there by himself on the big blue expanse of paper, seemingly gaping in total incomprehension:

These are drawings that I reckon I learn from. Stuff about poise and bodies and thighs and bulges and face lumps, and bulges. Important stuff.

Liquid Bunnies and the like.

I've got myself all in a muddle, drawing too much and everything getting out of synch.
I took it upon myself to learn how to draw bunnies again.

Although I feel like the subject matter in the wrestler drawings is pretty much secondary to the formal experimentation it allows and the attmempt to express some overall energetic enthusiasm, I still wanted to balance wrestlers with something more straightforwardly cute. Maybe so that the bouncyness of my intent becomes more clear.

I've found a lot of references to use for my bunny drawings. Nature for starters. Actual bunnies in my garden.

My cat Stephen kills a lot of bunnies in the spring. Little tender cute ones. But sometimes they can be rescued.

Surely you can see why rabbits belong in wrestling!

I had to figure out how my bunnies would be put together, even if they were going to end up as mere props in the squared circle. They became increasingly more liquid.

I've also begun to get into studying Beatrix Potter's rabbits and Thumper and various other bunnies of note. There have definitely been some clever bunny observers.

On an unrelated note, I just found a blog that an Australian lady called Ethel wrote about me. I think she likes my grey blog but she says not to read it on an empty stomach. From this frivolity about about Benjamin Bunny and Thumper you wouldn't think I was a thought-wrangling hardcore maniac, but clearly I am.

So perhaps I might try to have dense rich layers of many consistencies, like layers of heavy thought-rigour fudge, and layers of whipped bunnycream too, as we have observed today.

I'm going to try some tags. tell me if I've done it wrong:
